Collaboration, not competition, key to Johor–Singapore shared success, says Onn Hafiz

JOHOR BARU: Johor and Singapore’s complementary strengths make them well-placed to build a strong global economic network based on cooperation, the Johor Menteri Besar said.

Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said Johor’s strategic land, manufacturing and logistics capacity, combined with Singapore’s expertise in finance, innovation and global connectivity, created a partnership capable of driving sustainable regional growth.

“Johor and Singapore each possess distinct competitive advantages.

“Johor as a hub for industrial expansion, renewable energy and talent development, and Singapore as a global centre for trade, finance and technology.

“When aligned under the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), these strengths amplify one another, creating an ecosystem that enhances both nations’ international competitiveness.”

Onn Hafiz said this synergy reflected a forward-looking partnership model that could accelerate investment approvals, streamline cross-border trade, and open new gateways to global markets.

He added that the initiative would generate high-quality employment opportunities for both Malaysians and Singaporeans while strengthening supply chain resilience in the region.

“The success of our economies lies not in rivalry, but in collaboration,” he said today in a statement.

Earlier, Onn Hafiz and his state delegation received Singapore’s National Development Minister Chee Hong Tat and his delegation at his official residence, Saujana Johor Baru, here.

Onn Hafiz also commended Singapore’s commitment to cross-border cooperation under the JS-SEZ framework, stationg it exemplified how neighbouring economies could achieve shared prosperity through trust and mutual respect.

He also expressed hope that the special relationship between Johor and Singapore would continue to flourish, paving the way for a more resilient, prosperous and sustainable future for both sides of the Causeway.
